At the scene of the nocturnal incident in Ridgefield, Yusuf Bakmaz, a sophomore computer science student on the Dean’s List at Montclair State University, was declared dead.
Bakmaz belonged to Montclair State University’s Computer Science Club. Early on Saturday morning, a college student from Garfield, age 19, was tragically killed when the front of a brand-new restaurant in Ridgefield was struck by his Mustang. His girlfriend suffered severe wounds.
According to Ridgefield Police Chief TJ Gallagher, at around midnight on June 24, Yusuf Bakmaz failed to notice the split to Grand Avenue on the left as the two were traveling north on Broad Avenue. Karden, which had just recently opened in April on the site of the former Chan’s Dragon Inn, was struck by the youngster’s white 2002 Ford Mustang as it careered across the island and collided with another vehicle.
At the scene of the incident, Bakmaz, a second-year computer science student at Montclair State University who was on the Dean’s List, was declared dead.
His partner was rushed from the car to the trauma center at Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was reportedly in critical condition.
According to one of the rescuers, “all units worked extremely well,” maintaining the entire scene and ensuring the driver’s respectful removal.
The Mustang was taken away from the accident scene after first responders wrapped it in a sheet. The findings of the toxicological testing are still pending, according to Gallagher, so the Ridgefield police department can’t move on with its inquiry into what happened.
He claims that the excessive speed of the car was reported to authorities by witnesses.
