Yayra Estelle Rutherford Died near Los Angeles International Airport

A 1-year-old girl named Yayra Estelle Rutherford died near Los Angeles International Airport after being identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Officers were sent to Sepulveda and West Century boulevards on a report of a “medical emergency.” The LAPD’s Abused Child Unit was assigned to conduct a death investigation. Rutherford was found on a bus bench and her mother, sibling, and the other child were homeless. The other child, possibly a 2-year-old boy, was placed in the custody of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

The mother, who had been homeless since June, was interviewed by detectives and did not know how her daughter died. She reported the girl was being fussy and gave her a small amount of Benadryl. The family has been homeless since June and the mother is fearful about asking for help due to fear of her children being taken away.
