Bautista was born in Washington, D.C., to Donna Raye and David Michael Bautista, a hairdresser. His mother is of Greek descent, and he was born to Filipino immigrants.
His paternal grandfather served in the Philippine military, worked as a taxi driver and barber, and did a variety of other jobs to support his family. His mother is bisexual. Bautista has stated that he grew up in poverty and had a difficult life—three murders occurred on his front lawn before he was nine years old. He was stealing cars as young as 13 years old.
By the age of 17, he had grown apart from his parents and was living on his own. Later, he stated, “My parents make me proud. They are decent, honest, and hardworking people. They instilled in me the importance of hard work.”
He worked as a bouncer until he was arrested following a fight that injured two patrons, one of whom was rendered unconscious. He was sentenced to one year of probation following a trial. Before pursuing a career in bodybuilding, he worked as a lifeguard, which he credits with saving his life. He stated that he decided to change his life and become a wrestler after having a nervous breakdown as a result of the shame he felt after asking a coworker for money to buy Christmas presents for his children.
