Josh Jacobs attended McLain High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He made the decision to play collegiate football for the Alabama Crimson Tide at the University of Alabama after high school.

He shared playing time with Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough during his first season in 2016, carrying 85 times for 567 yards and four touchdowns.

During his sophomore season in 2017, he had 284 yards on 46 carries with one touchdown. A year later, during his junior year, he was named the MVP of the 2018 SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs. In the same game, he rushed for 83 yards with two touchdowns.

In the first round with the 24th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders.
