Co-founder of Primo’s Donuts, Ralph Primo Sr., Passes Away at Age 93

Ralph Primo Sr., co-founder of the beloved Primo’s Donuts in West LA, has passed away at the age of 93. The doughnut shop, located on Sawtelle Boulevard, was initially opened by Ralph and his wife, Celia, in 1956. They offered a variety of colorful yeast and cake doughnuts at affordable prices.

Over the course of 67 years, Ralph Primo Sr. became an enduring fixture in Los Angeles, just like the sweet fried fritters he served. Primo’s Donuts was known for its warmth and hospitality in the Westside neighborhood. Generations of families and students made it a daily or weekly ritual. Due to its consistent quality and creative offerings, Primo’s was featured in various national publications and lists as one of the best doughnut shops in the country.

In their statement on Instagram, the shop shared stories of how Ralph and Mrs. Primo welcomed customers into their shop with kindness and wonderful treats. Ralph was known for baking beautifully crafted doughnuts, performing neat little magic tricks, and sharing corny grandpa jokes, always with a smile on his face.

Ralph’s legacy lives on through his three children and numerous grandchildren. His son, Ralph Jr., has been primarily running the business in recent years. Ralph’s grandson, Nick, continues the tradition of painting holiday scenes on the shop’s windows every year. In September 2021, Primo’s Donuts expanded to the former Stan’s Donuts in Westwood, introducing Ralph’s original recipes to UCLA college students and more Angelenos.

One of Primo’s most famous offerings was the buttermilk doughnut, a delightful glazed cake fritter with a hint of tang. The shop was known for frying fresh doughnuts throughout the day, even in the afternoons, which was a rarity among doughnut shops in the city. Biting into one of their doughnuts was often so satisfying that it could induce a mild euphoria.
