Tragedy Strikes: Pregnant Takiya Young Fatally Shot by Police at Central Ohio Kroger
A heartbreaking incident unfolded at a bustling Kroger store in Blendon Township, as a 21-year-old pregnant woman, Takiya Young, was fatally shot by a police officer. The unfortunate events that transpired have left the community in shock and seeking answers.
The tragic episode occurred in the Kroger store’s parking lot on Sunbury Road around 6 p.m. on Thursday. Officers had been alerted about a woman reportedly shoplifting alcohol from the store when the situation took a tragic turn.
Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford released a recorded video statement, revealing that officers were assisting a driver who had been locked out of her car in the parking lot. An employee brought the woman’s activities to the officers’ attention, prompting them to approach her. Chief Belford explained that the woman was situated in a vehicle without a license plate, occupying a handicapped parking spot in front of the store.
Chief Belford recounted the unfortunate events, stating, “The woman put the car in gear and accelerated forward. The officer who was directly in the path of the oncoming car fired one shot through the front windshield.”
Efforts were immediately made to provide aid to the injured woman, as officers broke the car’s windows to render assistance. An emergency room doctor who happened to be nearby also provided aid until medical professionals arrived on the scene.
Tragically, Takiya Young was transported to St. Ann’s Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Regrettably, her unborn baby also did not survive the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, with state investigators from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation stepping in at the request of the police department. Chief Belford assured that video footage of the incident will be released after necessary redactions are made to comply with Ohio law. He also conveyed that he had spoken with the woman’s family during this difficult time.
