My lovely sister Ella, you astounded me every day with the fight you put up and the joy you maintained throughout this war,” Bresee wrote. Never in a million years did I imagine that I would be here, at this very moment, saying goodbye to you. Please accept my gratitude for the joy you’ve brought not only to myself, but to countless others. Heaven acquired a gorgeous angel today in the form of the best sister a brother could ever dream for. I will always and forever love you, Ella bear. Ella was to be recognized at Clemson’s home opener versus Furman last Saturday. Ella, 15, who had been in town all week and addressed the team, had a “setback” last Friday and had to be airlifted back to the Washington, D.C. area before last Saturday’s game at Memorial Stadium, so those plans had to be changed, as per head coach Dabo Swinney.

After playing in Clemson’s 35-12 victory over Furman and making two tackles, Bryan spoke to the media and then headed back to Maryland.

Swinney revealed on Tuesday that he is “not sure” whether or not Bresee will play in Clemson’s home game against Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

Swinney said,

“I don’t know” at the moment. We’ll let him play if he wants to, but he has bigger fish to fry than football right now. What that young man needs right now isn’t football, but rather a lot of support and guidance, and those are things that football can’t provide.

Bresee, a star defensive tackle, has been candid about the support he and his family have received from Clemson after his sister was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in early 2021.

For the 2021 season, the former No. 1 overall recruit sported long white strips reading “Ella Strong” on the backs of his arms, and he also received a new tattoo of the same phrase, a rose, and the Roman numerals of his younger sister’s birthday.

Bryan, now 20 years old, found motivation from Ella as he battled back from a torn left anterior cruciate ligament that ended his sophomore season after only four games. Ella proved to be a “big assistance,” as Bresee put it in August, thanks to their regular in-person and over-the-phone communication.

It simply encourages you to press on, he explained. My little sister, but she’s a kid with a lot going on in her life right now.

My problems are little compared to hers; she’s constantly a source of encouragement. Clemson football adopted the slogan “Ella Strong” in honor of Ella, whom Swinney dubs “the hardest Bresee in that entire family,” in a game against Furman. Clemson welcomed about a hundred guests for the home opener last week. Clemson nevertheless wore “E11A STRONG” T-shirts during its pregame Tiger Walk in honor of Ella, replacing the two L’s in her name with Bresee’s No. 11 jersey number, even though she was unable to attend the game. When asked to describe the game afterward, Bresee said it was “very wonderful.” The group “has been my support system down here while I’m not at home,” he said. Since this began a year ago, they have been there for me constantly. Colleagues have been emphasizing that point to me in recent days. On Saturday, linebacker Barrett Carter remarked,

“I think that our win today just sent Ella a message that we have her back.” Everything we accomplish now and every day this season is for her and Ella, for whom she has 135 brothers on this squad. On Monday, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei stated, “I love Ella, I love the Bresee family, and I love my brother Bryan.” That right there is like my best friend. It makes me emotional to think of them right now, with all that’s going on, but I really do adore that family. His younger sibling is “very gregarious and just a lovely person to be around,” as Bresee put it on Saturday about his younger sister. She always manages to find the bright side of things. To be in her company never fails to put a grin on my face. On Saturday, Swinney gushed, “She’s just one of the sweetest young ladies you’ll ever meet.” In spite of the difficulty of her situation, she is resilient and full of indescribable delight. I can’t believe it. As of Thursday, Bresee and the Tigers have received well wishes from a number of sources, including the University of South Carolina. “Heartbreaking. Tweeted the Gamecocks’ football team: “Our prayers are with Bryan, his family, and all of @ClemsonFB.”

In the wake of Bryan Bresee’s sister’s passing, the Gamecocks have sent their condolences to him and Clemson.
