Student at Wilkes University, Ava Fellerman of Florida, has died;
Eugene “Jean” Maffey, Sr., a Wilkes-Barre native, passed away on February 27, 2022 at the age of 82 at the Penn Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
— The Ava Fellerman Automobile Accident Ava Fellerman, a young woman from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was identified as the victim of a fatal wrong-way crash involving many vehicles on a Florida highway on Sunday.
In DeLand, Florida, on Sunday, a wrong-way driver killed three individuals, including 21-year-old Fellerman, the daughter of a renowned attorney.
Four vehicles were involved in the accident that occurred early on Sunday morning on Florida 44, east of Interstate 4 in Volusia County, and three individuals were killed, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, at around 2:20 a.m., a gray Toyota Tacoma traveling west on State Road 44 in the eastbound lane collided head-on with a black Infiniti Q50, sending both vehicles careening into the center median. Subsequently, a third vehicle collided with the Toyota, and a fourth vehicle collided with the debris.
The Toyota’s alleged driver ran from the scene, and despite the use of a K-9, the police were unable to track him down. According to FHP, he remains a mystery. According to the report, two passengers in the car driven by the suspect were seriously hurt.
All of the Infinity’s passengers, including the driver, a 22-year-old guy, were seriously injured in the crash. Fellerman, together with another male, and a female whose age was not disclosed, all died from their wounds, FHP reported.

If you haven’t heard, Ava Fellerman passed away suddenly December 11th. We are planning an event in honor of Ava at the new school at a later date. Ava had a huge impact on the people around her and I hope to share our memories and love we all had for her, together.

Gene Louis Maffei was born to Louis and Ruth Maffei on March 18, 1939, in Wilkes-Barre. From 1952 until his graduation in 1956, he was a student at GAR Memorial High. On February 16, they celebrated 60 years of marriage since he wed the love of his life, Dawn Sallitt (at midnight in the public square). He is the proud owner of both the Hess gas station and the Astro car wash. After 18 years in the Luzerne County Parks Department, Gene moved on to the Wilkes-Barre School District. At one time, he was a member of the Army Reserve.
Louis and Ruth Maffei, Gene’s parents, passed away before him. Grandparents-in-law Moses and Marie Sallitt; nephew Louis Maffey; and in-law Michael Brostowski.
Gene is survived by his best friend Nelson, his brothers Lou and Margo Maffei, his daughter Dawn and fiance John Blechmidt, his daughter Tonia and husband Gregory Barrouk, his son Eugene Jr. and wife Kathleen Maffei, his grandson Danielle and husband Michael O’Donovan, his grandsons Nicholas and wife Alexandra Porter, Julian and Ryan Maffei, Elise, Ava, and Aiden Fellerman, his great-granddaughters Nora and Ella O
Gene was a loving spouse, sibling, father, grandpa, and great-grandfather. His family is the source of his greatest pride and joy. He attends all of his grandchildren’s school and sporting events. His best friend, Bob Anstett, and he go on hunting trips frequently. While eating his wife’s home-cooked dinners and a piece of Dymonds Bakery cake, he enjoys watching the Dallas Cowboys and Penn State football games, NASCAR, and the many series on the Discovery Channel.
