The five Derby children who perished in a crash in New York over the weekend have been named by Westchester County officials.
Malik Smith, 16, was driving a Nissan Rogue on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale, New York, around 12:20 a.m. on Sunday when the car veered off the road, hit a rock and a tree, and caught fire, according to Westchester County Police.
According to Westchester County authorities, the fatalities included Smith, 17-year-old Anthony Billips Jr., Zahnyiah Cross, 12-year-old Shawnell Cross, and 8-year-old Andrew Billips. They claimed that the car contained at least two pairs of siblings.
Officials stated at a press conference on Monday that Smith did not possess a Connecticut or New York driver’s license or permit.
George Latimer, the executive of Westchester County, stated that detectives are attempting to ascertain whether the five children who perished in the collision were using seatbelts at the time of the collision.
According to officials, speed was not a contributing factor in the collision. They think Smith was either preoccupied or dozing off at the time of the collision, but they claim this is just a hypothesis and not supported by any physical evidence found at the scene.
According to Westchester County authorities, the crash-related injuries that resulted in the death were blunt force trauma.
The accident is still being looked into. It’s thought that no other vehicles were involved.
