Maggie Allesee Passes Away, Detroit arts advocate

Maggie Allesee was a philanthropist and longtime supporter of the arts, and charities died on Friday

She was 94.

Allesee, who aspired to become a ballerina in the future, gave millions of dollars to support dance at organizations such as the Detroit Opera, Wayne State University, and most recently, Eisenhower Dance Detroit, which this past Sunday unveiled its Maggie Allesee Studios for Dance and Arts Innovation.

Wayne State University said in an email that Allesee “was a seminal arts philanthropist at Wayne State and the university’s most devoted advocate for the study and performance of dance, a love that began at age 6 when she wanted to be a ballerina.”

Allesee gave Hospice of Michigan $3 million to establish the Maggie Allesee Center for Quality of Life, which will fund research and educational initiatives targeted at enhancing the care provided to terminally ill patients and their caregivers.

In addition, she served on the boards of several institutions, including the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Michigan Chapter, Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan, Cranbrook Academy of Art, The Parade Co., Eisenhower Dance Ensemble, Wayne State University Foundation, Oakland University Foundation, Detroit Historical Society, Forgotten Harvest, Community Health of Birmingham, Junior League of Birmingham, Fan Club of Michigan, and Hospice of Michigan.

She won numerous honors, including the President’s Award from the National Dance Education Organization, the Project Hope Lifetime Achievement Award, the United Way Heart of Gold, and the Michigan Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Her relatives stated that no funeral arrangements have yet been made.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the deceased’s family and friends, who have been struggling with the loss of such an intelligent and compassionate individual.
