In general, a felonious assault is defined as an assault or threat of an assault on another person involving the use of a potentially lethal weapon and the intent to seriously injure but not kill the target. Most people agree on this fundamental concept, albeit the precise definition differs from jurisdiction to jurisdiction due to various interpretations of purpose as well as many criteria and distinctions that draw the line between misdemeanor and felony charges. In order to properly tailor the punishment to the particular offense, additional distinctions are frequently made between the various classes of felonious assault. According to MyLawQuestions, one type of assault and battery is when an assailant harms a victim to the point where medical treatment is necessary.

Investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the incident.
