In a double homicide that occurred in Phenix City on Saturday afternoon, one of the shooting victims has been named.
According to his parents, Dr. Kenneth Burkus and Michelle Burkus, John Arthur Burkus, 32, was one of two victims who were shot and killed on the Phenix City Riverwalk just to the north of the Troy University campus.
Both victims have not been identified by Phenix City authorities, but Dr. Burkus says WRBL he has been in communication with police ever since he was informed before 5 o’clock in the evening. Saturday.
Dr. Burkus claimed that John Burkus of Columbus and his lab mix, Charlotte, were walking along the Phenix City Riverwalk when they happened upon a shooting.
According to his parents, John loved being outside and frequented the riverwalks on both sides of the Chattahoochee River.
Before starting to walk Charlotte, Dr. Burkus claimed he had spoken to his son, and they had agreed to watch college football later in the day.
In a statement to WRBL, the Burkus family said that John was their first-born son and that he helped pave the way for his siblings. Only his love for his family and friends could rival his intensity for life.
A black man who was “a person of interest” in the shooting and was seen in the area at the time of the offense was sought out by Phenix City Police late on Saturday.
On Sunday morning, there was no immediate information on whether that person had been informed.
