But Michaels had more in stock that Hobby Lobby did. It also had a greater variety of brands and prices to choose from in each area. Hobby Lobby had a lot of great sales and deals, but it carried more low-end products than Michaels, which carried a greater range of high-quality products.
A lot will depend on the store’s location, the employees that work their and other business factors. Also, Hobby Lobby may not prioritize fabrics as much as Michael’s or Joann’s so their selection may not always be the best.
Hobby Lobby has sales around 40 – 50% off memoirs, Christian books, and self-help titles, but nothing that’ll help you on your next project. Although Michaels boasts a solid in-store selection of product, I found that most options were not available to purchase online. The opposite was true with Joann.
Hobby Lobby and Michaels were setting up for Halloween when we visited in August. Hobby Lobby & Michaels sell arts-and-crafts products like canvases and paint, sketchbooks, scrapbooking supplies, and home decor. The two stores also offer craft classes for kids and adults, as well as DIY project ideas and tips.
Why did Michaels pull away?
Michaels pulls away slightly only because I found more brand variety and had better luck buying in bulk — especially online, where Joann had only a few bulk options.
Joann’s sales happen a few times a year. If your timing doesn’t line up, though, remember that buttons at Joann are coupon friendly.

Joann accepts Michaels coupons. The craft store also allows you to use more than one discount coupon within the same transaction, as long as each coupon is from a different source (for example, a newspaper insert coupon with a website coupon).
But if you need premium brands like Sulky and Gütermann, you won’t have any luck at Michaels. Fortunately, Joann stocks these brands, and it’s normal to find these products on sale for 50% off. Be sure to use your highest-value coupon from either Michaels or Joann to bring the price down.
Hobby Lobby’s scrapbook section is arguably the most modern, and the company runs regular 40% off sales on paper craft and scrapbooking supplies. Specific deals change week to week, but Hobby Lobby employees told me that Tim Holtz products, single sheets, and planner stickers go on sale at least every other week.
Hobby Lobby loses on couponing, but everything goes on sale. Hobby Lobby did away with their 40% off coupon in March 2021 and doesn’t accept competitor coupons. So, they lose the couponing game. Hobby Lobby claims this move will allow it to do more storewide discounts, which can be found via the Weekly Ad.
Is Michael’s in Aville clean?
I like Michael’s- the one here in Aville recently renovated and spruced up their SB stuff, so it’s nicely laid out and organized, and they’re ALWAYS clean. Plus, they have a TON of other craft stuff, so I like to cruise around and see if there’s things in other departments that I can add to my SB stuff.

Which is better, Michael’s or Hobby Lobby?
If you are looking for quality over savings then possibly Michael’s is better than Hobby Lobby in that category. Hobby Lobby helps people save money while Michael’s helps them get better quality products to use in their different projects. Then Michael’s usually has more of a selection on different items.
Others do not like Hobby Lobby because they do not see it as a good fabric and sewing store to shop at.
It seems that Hobby Lobby routinely places top item son sale to make sure their customers get the best deals. One of the problems that Joann’s has is that their employees are not always knowledgeable and they do not seem to have top math skills.
Joann’s prices are said to be lower than Michael’s and on par with Hobby Lobby. They are trying to beat their competition through lower prices. But that fact doesn’t mean the products you buy will be the best quality.
Another observation is that this fabric outlet may not have unique products that set them apart from other fabric chains or local craft stores.
