Who is the owl house?
The Disney animated series The Owl House features a number of characters created by Dana Terrace. It follows the story of Luz Noceda, an average fantasy loving girl who finds herself transported to the Boiling Isles. She meets Eda Clawthorne, the Owl Lady, and the diminutive yet adorable demon King who is her roommate at the titular Owl House. Together, the three go on fantastic adventures and encounter magical phenomena. Recurring characters include Luz’s classmates at Hexside Academy, Willow Park, Gus Porter, and Amity Blight; Eda’s sister Lilith, a great witch in her own right; and Hooty, the living door knocker on the Owl House.
Willow Park (voiced by Tati Gabrielle) is a student at Hexside and Luz and Gus’s friend who is skilled with plant magic. Originally, Willow was placed in the Abomination Track due to her parents’ wishes. She was terrible at performing on this track, which caused much bullying from her classmates, especially Amity Blight, who would call her “Half-a-Witch Willow”. Upon meeting Luz for the first time, the two attempted to improve her image, which works up to a certain point. Eventually, Willow was forced to use her plant magic, which upon being viewed by Principal Bump, allowed her to transfer to the Plant Track. Since then, Willow has grown from a shy and insecure girl to a confident and even level-headed individual who tends to act as the voice of reason to Luz’s eccentricity and Gus’ over-confidence. She and Amity used to be close friends since childhood, but due to Amity’s parents not wanting to associate with her due to her lack of magic, Amity cut ties with her, causing great misery to both her and Amity. Willow eventually learns this in “Understanding Willow” and, while she still does not reaccept Amity’s friendship, she appreciates that she is trying to do right by her. In that same episode, Willow is shown to have two dads. In “Wing It Like Witches”, Willow’s newfound confidence has earned her some respect at Hexside, though some students like Boscha still pick on her. She shows considerable restraint, as while she wanted to use the Green Thumb Gauntlet to expand her plant abilities, she immediately returned it uttering “I just wanted to try it out,” though she still used it later to help Luz.
Emperor Belos (voiced by Matthew Rhys) is a mysterious and sinister masked man who is the ruler of the Boiling Isles and the most powerful magic user alive, to whom the Emperor’s Coven serve personally. According to history, Emperor Belos got rid of the troublesome demons and witches that were affecting the Titan, and arranged for the rest of the magic users to use their magic the right way. This led to him establishing different covens, where those who don’t join are sentenced to an irreversible petrification. Lilith joined the Emperor’s Coven in order for Belos to honor her deal to cure Eda of her owl monster curse. When she finally caught Eda and restored her mind while she was still in her owl monster form, Belos went back on his word with Lilith to cure Eda’s curse. Belos plots to access the human world on the Day of Unity.
Lilith Clawthorne (voiced by Cissy Jones) is Eda’s estranged older sister and, until the events of the episode “Young Blood, Old Souls”, leader of the Emperor’s Coven. Lilith and Eda have a strained relationship, with the former insisting on coming with her to see Emperor Belos. She gets humiliated time and time again by Eda, who stymies her at every turn. It was greatly implied that she had genuinely good motives for wanting to have Eda come with her when she unknowingly admits to Luz that Eda wanted to join the Emperor’s Coven when she was little. Despite their terse relationship, the two of them do express longing for some kind of reconnection.
King (voiced by Alex Hirsch) is a small wolf-like demon with a skull-like head and Eda’s roommate who is the self-proclaimed “King of Demons”. While it is not known if he truly is the King of Demons, he certainly retains an overly confident and domineering attitude that implies that he once held some greatness. He was initially frightened of Luz when he first met her, but warmed up to her appearance when she helped him. While she continues to coddle him, King wants to be seen as “cool” and claims to have vast knowledge of all monsters and demons, though some of it might be based on his own false presumptions. Regardless, he is willing to acknowledge it if it was incorrect. His relationship with Eda ranges from two casual roommates to a child and his aunt. While he is quick to poke fun at her, he cares about her and wanted to help repress her curse. King is shown to be bossy and manipulative, but ultimately shows his heroic and caring side whenever he and his friends are in danger. His ultimate goal is to obtain followers and have absolute power. This results in him finding himself in ludicrous situations such as bringing dolls to life to do his bidding, becoming a teacher at Hexside, and using Eda in her monster form to rule a playground. All efforts usually result in him losing this “power” and things going back to normal. Despite his rambunctious nature, he begins to act more dog-like around Luz and openly misses her whenever she goes out to Hexside or hangs out with someone other than him.
Who is the Emperor of the Boiling Isles?
Emperor Belos is the mysterious witch who rules over the Boiling Isles and the main antagonist of The Owl House. He made his first physical appearance in ” Agony of a Witch “. He is protected by the Emperor’s Coven and resides in his palace at the literal heart of the Isles.
Fifty years before the start of the series, Belos ended the Savage Ages, a time when witches and demons used magic freely, by coming to power and creating the Coven System, which limited individuals to one kind of magic unless they joined the ranks of the Emperor’s Coven that answered to him.
At some point, he constructed a palace as a symbol of unity and collected a vast array of magical artifacts he kept there. At least sixteen years before the start of the series, Belos’ family died from the use of wild magic, leaving only his nephew, Hunter, alive.
The Emperor’s name is misspelled as “Bellows” in the closed captioning. He created the Coven System for categorizing magic into specific disciplines instituted by himself. In ” Agony of a Witch “, he is revealed to be in poor health unless he absorbs magic from a palisman, which administers as eye drops.
His authority is shown to be a powerful one that garners fear and respect. He is not above lying, having made a promise to Lilith Clawthorne he had no intention of keeping. If his claims can be believed, Belos can speak to the Titan that forms the Boiling Isles and is working on its behalf.
