A veteran deputy probation officer for Los Angeles County was identified as the woman who was apparently beaten to death in her Lancaster home over the weekend.
Probation officer Paula Lind, who had worked for the county for 16 years, “was a victim of a home invasion where she suffered fatal injuries,” according to a news release issued by the department on Monday.
“Our emotions are heavy on this day. Every day, our officers go above and beyond to assist citizens in getting back on their feet and rebuilding their lives in ways that contribute to a safer community “Adolfo Gonzales, head of the Los Angeles County Probation Department, made the remark in a statement.
“The news that one of our beloved Officers had to leave us in such a horrific way is shocking. If justice is to be done, the person or people responsible for this attack must be identified and punished. All of us here at The Washington Post send our deepest condolences to everyone in the Lind family.”
At 12:05 a.m. on Sunday, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a home invasion in the 45500 block of Barrymoore Avenue, where they found a woman suffering from blunt head trauma. The victim’s death was ruled an instant death.
Authorities say they arrested a man they found inside the house.
In a Facebook post published on Monday, AFSCME Local 685, the union representing deputy probation officers, named Lind as the victim.
The LA County Coroner’s Office was “processionally escorted by our Department’s Honor Guard and SEO deputies,” the post said. Please accept our deepest condolences and keep the family in your prayers as they mourn privately in this most tragic of times.
Monday, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger released a statement calling Lind’s death “a tragic loss of life.”
Probation officer “who devoted her life’s work to helping effect positive change in the lives of the probationers she supervised,” as described by her colleague Barger. “This vicious attack demands accountability and justice for the perpetrator. I intend to keep tabs on how this probe pans out.”
