Barnes grew up in Marion, Indiana, where he attended Marion High School. Barnes was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and raised in Marion, Indiana.
He attended Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, and was named the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference freshmen of the year in 2007 and player of the year in 2009.
