Waco American Apocalypse David Koresh Biography

David Koresh (age: 33; August 17, 1959 – April 19, 1993) was a leader of a religious group named Branch Davidians, established by leader Victor Houteff. The Branch Davidians are a Christian sect, an offshoot of the Seventh-day Adventist church with a literal interpretation of the Bible’s prophecies. Houteff and his followers settled near Waco, Texas, in 1935.

Branch Davidians believe in the second coming of Jesus Christ and the day of judgment in which God will punish the wicked and reward the good. In preparation for judgment day, the branch Davidians isolated themselves from the outside world in their commune near Waco, confined to a 77-acre compound called the Mount Carmel Center.

In 1993 Americans watched breathlessly as FBI agents faced off with the Branch Davidians. The standoff lasted 51 days and took over 80 lives, including Koresh’s. Recently Netflix released a documentary, “Waco: American Apocalypse,” describing what happened on April 19, 1993.

David Koresh’s Wife & Children

Koresh is widely accused of sexual abuse of children. He maintained physical relationships with females far younger than him, although Texas Child Protection Service failed to find any evidence.

He married Rachel Jones, the daughter of Dravidians Mary and Perry Belle Jones. Some Branch Davidians revealed that Koresh used to spank his son Cyrus after being annoyed by his crying.

What is the True Story of Waco?

Word eventually reached federal authorities that the cult was illegally stockpiling weapons. On February 28, 1993, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco, and firearms arrived at the Mount Carmel Compound armed with search warrants for the property and an arrest warrant for Koresh. Gunfire erupted, although it’s unclear which side started it.

At the end of the two-hour standoff, four ATF agents and six Branche Davidians died. The FBI intervened, and nearly 900 members of law enforcement descended on the compound, including Texas rangers, army personnel, and national guardsmen for weeks. FBI negotiators bargained with Koresh, bringing in supplies and allowing him to sermonize on the radio to get him to surrender.

People protesting against the Waco Siege

Though David allowed several Davidians to leave, he displayed no signs of turning himself in, and authorities tried hardball tactics. Authorities turned off the electricity, blasted loud music, and flashed harsh spotlights into the compound’s windows, which didn’t work either.

After a 51-day standoff, Attorney General Janet Reno gave the FBI the green light to raid Mount Carmel. On April 19, tanks rolled in and punched holes into walls surrounding the compound and deposited nearly 400 canisters of tear gas inside the building.

Several hours later, a fire broke out and reduced the entire property to ash within an hour; around 80 Branch Davidians died, including David Koresh and 25 Children, while most died from fire and smoke inhalation.

The Aftermath

As per sources, two Branch Davidian members were found with fatal bullet wounds to the hand. Four federal agents were also killed during that siege. Several months later, a federal grand jury indicted 12 of the surviving Branch Davidians for unlawful possession of firearms and aiding the murder of federal officers.

Many believe the government’s actions were overly aggressive and maybe even illegal. The raid drew sharp public criticism, and controversy swirled over whether or not federal agents started the fire and shot the Branch Davidians. At the center of the storm was Janet Reno, who issued the final order to raid the compound in 1999.

She appointed independent counsel John Danforth to investigate the incident. Danforth concluded that the agents were not responsible and placed the blame squarely on Koresh and his followers for setting the blaze and shooting themselves to fulfill their apocalyptic prophecy.

Another thing that was found after the operation was a black colored Camaro which was later auctioned and sold to the famous personality Zak Bagan for $34,000 in 2004.

Where was David Koresh Born?

On August 17, 1959, David Koresh (age 33) was born in Houston, TX, United States. His parents had named him Vernon Wayne Howell, but in 1990, he changed his name. Reportedly when he was born, his mother, Bonnie Sue Clark, was only 14 and was abandoned by her partner (Koresh’s dad), Bobby Wayne Howell, to live with another girl.

Due to troubled conditions, Vernon spent the first 7 years of his life with his grandmother Earline Clark. In 1966, Bonnie returned to Koresh and raised her son with her new partner Roy Haldeman.

Many do not know that Wayne was born with dyslexia and had to attend special classes, but not for long because he dropped out of Garland High School in his junior year.

At 22, David came to Waco, Texas, and became a member of Branch Davidians. He used to play guitar and sing every day in church at Mount Carmel Center. Ultimately he started himself as God and undertook the leadership of the Branch Davidians.
