In Centerville, a cyclist was killed in what appears to be a hit-and-run accident, leaving two men dead. Later, the accused driver’s body was discovered.
As part of their investigation into the cyclist’s death, police got in touch with the West Bountiful man they thought was operating the car that hit the rider. According to the Centerville Police Department, that man broke into his house and committed suicide.
The rider has been identified as Bountiful resident Kevin Reed Jessop, 63. Justin Dewayne Bennett, 43, is the man suspected of hitting him driving a white Toyota Tundra.
The first reports of a bicycle and car collision on Saturday night at 11:18 were made, according to the police, at roughly 600 South Frontage Road in Centerville. The location of the collision revealed that Jessop had passed away.
Vehicle fragments were discovered outside the house by the responding officers. Bennett was then momentarily in contact with officers outside his home, at which point he ran inside, according to the police. A single shot was then heard by the police.
“A search warrant was executed as the officers remained outside the house. When police entered the house, they discovered Bennett dead, according to the authorities.
Police said they located the Toyota that was involved in the hit-and-run accident inside Bennett’s garage. Investigations are being conducted to determine the precise events that caused the incident.
