As it turns out, probably quite a bit. Ray Romano can play the piano because his mother was a piano teacher by trade. In fact, she is a Juilliard graduate who studied to be a concert pianist. She gave it up to raise her family but she taught lessons for 50 years.
Season Two of Romano’s show includes an episode entitled, “Mozart.” Like many children before her, Ray’s daughter on the show, Ally, is fighting against having to continue piano lessons with her grandmother. To be a good role model for his daughter, Ray decides he will be the one to take lessons from his mother so he can show Ally what is possible.
Many aspects of Everybody Loves Raymond are factual and 90% based on the real lives of Romano and executive producer Phil Rosenthal. When Ray finishes playing the song on the piano in the final moments of the episode, the audience and cast members’ reactions seem as genuine as the performance they just witnessed.

Ray Romano. Raymond Albert Romano (born December 21, 1957) is an American stand-up comedian, actor and screenwriter. He is best known for his role on the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, for which he received an Emmy Award, and as the voice of Manny in the Ice Age film series.
After transferring from Archbishop Molloy High School, Romano graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1975. He was in the same high school class as Fran Drescher. Before getting into show business, Romano briefly attended Queens College, in Flushing, New York, where he studied accounting.
Romano’s goal was to finish the show being able to break 80.
In February 2012, Romano revealed that his wife, Anna, had successfully battled stage one breast cancer in 2010. Romano told People magazine that “the reason we’re going public is to share our experience, yeah, but to have an effect. Our goal is to help people.”.
In August 2006 Romano was interviewed in front of a live audience at UCLA by fellow stand-up veteran David Steinberg, for an episode of Sit Down Comedy with David Steinberg. The program first aired on the TV Land network in March 2007.

Romano was born in Queens, New York City, the second son of Luciana “Lucie” ( née Fortini), a piano teacher, and Albert Romano (1925 – 2010), a real estate agent and engineer. He is of Italian descent. He grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens.

The real Robert was supposedly not happy with how he was portrayed on screen. Robert Romano is a second-grade teacher who lives in New York while Romano’s older brother Richard is a sergeant with the NYPD.
