Mount Vernon, South Dakota, mourns the loss of 24-year-old Calvin Boluyt, a resident of Corsica, who tragically lost his life in a fatal two-vehicle collision on Wednesday, December 6. Calvin Boluyt was the driver of a 2011 Chrysler 200 involved in the crash, which occurred around 10:53 a.m., approximately two miles south of Mount Vernon. The collision took place at the intersection of 397th Avenue and Interstate 90.

Authorities reported that a 2014 Caterpillar highway maintainer, driven by Steven Groseth, 63, of Corsica, was traveling north on 397th Avenue. The Chrysler 200, driven by Calvin Boluyt, was heading south on the same road, approaching the I-90 overpass.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Caterpillar began drifting into the ditch but overcorrected, crossing the center line into the path of the southbound Chrysler 200. The vehicles collided in the southbound lane of the roadway.

Tragically, Calvin Boluyt was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Highway Patrol noted that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Steven Groseth, the driver of the Caterpillar, emerged from the incident without injuries.
