Former Director Of Harvard Hillel, Bernie Steinberg Passes Away From Cancer.
We sadly say goodbye to Bernie Steinberg, who served as the founding fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, a faculty member at the Pardes Institute of Jerusalem, and the director of Harvard Hillel from 1993 to 2010.
Bernie was one of David Hartman’s first students and completed an excellent dissertation on Hermann Cohen and Nahman Krochmal at the Hebrew University. Instead of going to college, he decided to work in the Jewish community.
A few weeks ago, he bravely published an opinion piece in the Crimson titled “For the Safety of Jews and Palestinians, Stop Weaponizing Antisemitism at Harvard,” which became his last public statement.
He was a mentsch, a true lamdan, an excellent director, and a fervent Torah enthusiast. We shall sincerely miss him. May blessings come from his remembrance
